Yunnan Remain Lockdown Due to Cross-boarder Cases

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus in Wuhan, China, countries around the world have implemented blockade measures. Strict quarantine measures in China’s provinces and cities, while effectively preventing the spread of the new coronavirus, have also paid a huge economic price. At the same time, new cases of coronavirus infections are growing rapidly in other parts of the world and deaths are soaring.

In early June, we contacted our colleagues in Mojiang and Lancang, Yunnan Province, to inquire about the local outbreak and measures. They said that although the national outbreak is largely over, people infected with the corona virus still cross into Yunnan through the local rainforest from time to time from Myanmar. As a result, Yunnan is still under lockdown.

In view of this situation, we are still unable to go to Yunnan to issue stipends. We will continue to monitor and respond to the outbreak on the ground.

World Health Organization Declares COVID-19 a ‘Pandemic.’

The World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11 declared COVID-19 a pandemic, pointing to the over 118,000 cases of the coronavirus illness in over 110 countries and territories around the world and the sustained risk of further global spread.

An epidemic refers to an uptick in the spread of a disease within a specific community. By contrast, the WHO defines a pandemic as global spread of a new disease, though the specific threshold for meeting that criteria is fuzzy. The declaration refers to the spread of a disease, rather than the severity of the illness it causes.

Our trip will be postponed indefinitely until the pandemic stops.
